I read with enthusiasm the recent announcement by North Tyneside Council to suspend parking charges in many areas of our local town centres during the festive period.
UKIP campaigned for fairer town centre parking during its local election campaign earlier this year so I’m very pleased that the council has taken our ideas onboard exactly as we had suggested, even if it is only for a few weeks.
I believe that the relaxation of parking charges will indeed create more favourable trading conditions for our hard-hit town centre retailers by encouraging more shoppers to visit.
The owners of Silverlink retail park, remember, have never charged the public for parking there whilst shopping so this creates a more level playing field.
I hope the council will extend the plan permanently and demonstrate their commitment to helping our local businesses.
