A TYNESIDE man is recovering in hospital this morning after being stabbed at Cullercoats Metro station last night.
The 22-year-old was stabbed in the back while standing on the platform at 10.39pm.
Police have said they believe the attacker knows the victim, and detectives are looking at CCTV footage as well as making further enquiries around the area.
DCI Max Black of North Tyneside Area Command said: “I would like to reassure the public that this is not a random attack and the victim and suspect are believed to be known to each other.
“We know there were a number of people in the station at the time of the incident so I would ask anyone who witnessed the attack or who has any information about the incident to get in touch.”
The suspect is described as being 5ft 6ins to 5ft 10ins tall with shaved hair at the back and sides and wearing a blue jacket.
The incident meant Cullercoats Metro station was closed by the police and did not re-open until the start of Metro services this morning (Friday) and were subject to delays for a short period as a result.
A Metro spokesman said: “Police are now investigating this incident and we will assist them in any way we possibly can.
“Incidents of this nature are rare on the Metro system, but when they do occur we work closely with the police to help them to track down those responsible.”
