Man tied up by ‘armed’ burglars

A homeowner was tied up by two armed men who broke into his house.

The victim suffered minor injuries to his face and left shaken after two men entered his house in Sharnford Close, Backworth, at around 9am on Thursday, February 6.

The men threatened the occupant with what is described as a handgun and a knife before tying him up and making off with a quantity of cash.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who has any information about the aggravated burglary.

The offenders are described as white, around 6ft tall and both wearing dark jackets with white zips and white draw strings.

They had scarves around their faces and wore white ‘scruffy’ trainers and black leather gloves.

The first man is also described as being of heavy build, in his late 40s and wearing camouflage trousers.

The second man is described as being of slim build, 20 to 30-years-old and wearing pale blue trousers, possibly jeans.

Extra officers have been in the area to carry out enquiries and reassure local residents.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area in the early hours of Thursday morning or witnessed any suspicious behaviour.
