Murder enquiry ongoing after discovery of woman

A murder enquiry is continuing in North Shields this morning after a woman was found dead at a Barber shop in the town.

At 11.18am on Sunday, police received a report that the body of a woman had been found inside the Sole’O barber shop premises in Nile Street, North Shields.

Officers and paramedics attended and Lisa Jane Banks, who was 46, and from the North Shields area was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nile Street remains cordoned off while enquiries take place and at this stage the incident is being treated as a murder enquiry.

North Tyneside Chief Superintendent Steve Neill said on Sunday: “The report came in around 11:20am Sunday morning and the investigation into Lisa Bank’s death is in it’s early stages.

“Detectives are at the scene in Nile Street and the road is closed off to allow enquiries to be carried out.

“Residents who live in Nile Street have been allowed into their homes as normal but the public and road users are asked to avoid the area if possible for the time being.

“We have extra neighbourhood officers around Nile Street to speak to the public and offer residents reassurance and they will be in the area throughout the evening and tonight.

“We would appeal for anyone who was in Nile Street on Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening, particularly between the times of 1:40pm to around 5pm, and who may have heard or seen anything suspicious near to the Sole’O barber shop to contact us as soon as possible.

“If anyone has any concerns, or to pass any information onto police, they can speak to officers in the area face to face or by ringing 101. People can also pass information on anonymously via Crimestoppers if they wish on 0800 555 111.”
