Pensioner mugged in broad daylight in Wallsend

An elderley woman is receiving hospital treatment today after being mugged in Wallsend.

The lady, in her 80s, was on Carville Gardens at around 1.40pm yesterday (Monday) and making her way towards Union Street in the town when she was approached from behind by a man who grabbed her bag.

She was pulled to the ground during the struggle which caused injuries to her wrist and leg, which she is receiving hospital treatment for.

Her bag, which is black leather and contained cash and personal items, has not been found.

The man is described by police as 22-24 years old, of scruffy appearance and was wearing what’s described as a grey or black hooped jumper.

North Tyneside Chief Inspector Jamie Pitt said: “This was a disgraceful crime carried out in broad daylight targeting an elderly woman who was injured during this incident.

“Extensive enquiries including house to house visits are ongoing to trace the man responsible and extra officers will be out and about in the area to provide reassurance.

“We’d ask anyone who was in the area around Carville Gardens yesterday and may have seen or heard anything suspicious to get in touch.”
