YOUNG and old gathered in their thousands to get up close to the Olympic Torch as it passed through Tynemouth.
Hundreds lined the streets along The Broadway as the torch made its way to the village at 2.40pm today.
And there were even more people awaiting its arrival, as students from The King’s School were joined by shopkeepers, residents and visitors to cheer on the Olympic Flame as it headed along Front Street towards Tynemouth Priory, returning back to Tynemouth Road.
Some workers even took to rooftops and looked on from first floor windows for the “once in a lifetime” opportunity to see the Olympic Flame as it made its way towards Newcastle for its overnight stop.
Street entertainment was provided ahead of the torch’s arrival, with stilt-walkers, unicycle riders and more encouraging the children to cheer and wave their Union Jack flags.
The Torch then headed down Tynemouth Road on its way to North Shields, with hundreds more residents lining the street.
