STAFF from the borough branch of Halford’s will be cheering on Newcastle United tonight in their European clash at St James’ after scooping second prize in a nationwide customer service campaign.
The team from the Silverlink Shopping Park, in Wallsend, won £3,000 when they finished second in the race for the customer service crown, and used the money to buy tickets to the second leg of the quarter final tie against Benfica.
Store manager Ian Hunter said: “It’s been a real battle for the Chairman’s Award at Halford’s and I know I should be happy but I wanted first and I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t finish on top but we are the best performing team in Great Britain.”
The cash is for a celebration event for all the staff.
He added: “We got our £3,000 and we went off and booked a corporate event in the Magpie Suite for the game that morning.
“There are 28 of us going and we’ll finish at noon that day and we’ll be off for a three-course meal and to see the game and we reckon the Toon can do it with a big crowd behind them.
“I’m sure there’ll be a great atmosphere, we’re all really looking forward to it, apart from one. Andy Smith hates football so he’s minding the store and we’ll find a nice treat for him instead.”
