A local leg of a charity fundraising event has sold out – forcing organisers to double the capacity.
The Sport Relief Mile in Whitley Bay became the first Mile to sell out in the UK.
The event, organised by Northumberland Clubs for Young People (NCYP) in conjunction with Whitley Bay Boys Club, was a success in 2014 with more than 100 people taking part by either walking or running the mile, helping to raise money for charities in the process.
This year’s event saw the capacity increased to 150 – selling out in a matter of weeks. Event capacity has now been increased to 300.
It will take place at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay, on Sunday, March 10, starting at 10am.

Louise Laws, of NCYP, said: “I’m delighted that the NCYP Whitley Bay Sport Relief Mile has been so popular, and we’re very excited that ours is the first Mile to sell out across the UK.”
“Northumberland Clubs for Young People are a small charity, helping out local young people.
“But we love to give back and fundraise for big events like Sport Relief.
“We’ve helped at a few locally-organised Sport Relief events in years past, but in 2014 I noticed that there were no events in North Tyneside and decided to create our own.”
