DEMOCRACY: Concerned by attitude

I write to express my growing concern over the likely early demise of democracy in England due to the apparent contempt shown by so-called politicians to the electorate.

In the run-up to my exercising my right to vote in the local election in the Preston Ward of North Tyneside I awaited with optimism that I would be able to speak face to face with one or more candidates, or at the very least to read of their party and personal policies that affect their constituents.

My optimism was in vain, and in the late afternoon of election day I set off to my polling station, where I spoilt my ballot paper – what a tragic waste of the vote others in our past fought so hard for me to have as my right.

I believe the attitude shown by politicians (public servants) towards the electorate isn’t confined to local politics, but can be witnessed almost every day by the politicians of both major parties.
