So councillors have not had a rise in five years ... what I don’t understand is why they get allowances in the first place.
My father was an independent councillor in Felixstowe, Suffolk, for some years, attending as many meetings as he was able, but he never claimed a penny.
He had stated when he was elected that he didn’t agree to councillors getting paid for doing something they chose to do and that nobody forced them to put themselves up for election.
So now these ‘volunteers’ are getting a rise which ‘workers’ would give their eye teeth for.
I feel there cannot be many North Tyneside council tax payers who agree ... so in the words of my late dad, “if you councillors think your hard done by, get out”, which he was heard to say on many occasions.
