Drink-driver jailed for causing death of much-loved husband

In July 2016, Davey Hope, who was 43, had stopped his car at a collision on the A19 near to the Killingworth turn-off in North Tyneside and got out to see if he could help anyone.

While out of his car, and trying to help, another car passing the site of the collision collided with him.

Officers and paramedics attended the scene and he was given urgent treatment at the roadside, however Davey, sadly died from his injuries.

Daniel Angus, 25 of Ashington, was arrested and after appearing at Newcastle Crown Court on March 29, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving; driving with excess alcohol and driving with no insurance.

On Friday, Angus was sentenced to five years imprisonment for causing death by dangerous driving, driving over the prescribed limit and driving with no insurance. His licence has been endorsed for failing to stop at a collision and he has been disqualified from driving for 12 and a half years and must complete an extended driving test.

Jacki Hope, Davey’s wife has said: “My husband Davey loved life and was admired and loved by everyone he met.

“Davey always had a smile on his face and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. Without being asked Davey would do anything to help anybody even if he didn’t know them. He had a heart of gold.

“He was a proud driver for Crown Taxis, loved Newcastle United and his many many friends. Together with his family and friends, we are all devastated to have lost someone so precious to us.

“Daniel Angus has been sentenced to a lengthy time in prison but this will never bring Davey back.

“We now need to go forward with our lives and remember the good times we all had with Davey. He will never be forgotten.”
