Driver arrested after police chase through North Shields ends in crash

A driver has been arrested after leading police on a chase through North Shields which ended in a two car crash.

Motor patrols officers had been pursuing a Peugeot when it crashed with a Jeep vehicle on Preston Road at the junction of Queen Alexandra Road, in North Shields, near The Gunner pub.

The vehicle had failed to stop for them in the Albion Road area after being seen to be driven in a suspicious manner.

The front seat passenger of Peugeot, a 29-year-old woman, has been taken to the RVI to be treated for a minor head injury and dislocated hip. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

No-one else was seriously injured as a result of the crash.

The driver of the Peugeot, a 21-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He is currently helping police with enquiries.

Police are investigating the full circumstances of the crash.

Roads around the crash scene have been closed while officers carry out those investigations and recover the vehicles.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened just before midnight on Tuesday, June 16.
