AT Churchill Community College in Wallsend, 30 per cent of grades awarded were As or A*s, up ten per cent on last year.

Headteacher David Baldwin said: “It’s been absolutely brilliant. Today is the culmination of huge amounts of hard work from this group of young people and staff over the last two years.

“This is our best set of results again, and the school is continuing to raise the bar. It has put us in a very stable position now and for the future.”

Paul Cherry, of Forest Hall, got As in biology, chemistry and physics and will now study biomedical sciences at Newcastle University.

Sam Palmer, of East Howdon, will study law at Newcastle University, thanks to his B grades in history, geography and English literature.
