The first XI travelled to Churchill playing fields under the new stewardship of captain Chris Wrigley and were asked to bat by their hosts in the cold conditions.

The innings was building slowly until John Douglas and Adnan Kamal started to press the accelerator.

A short rain break seemed to stem this impetus with both batsmen losing their wickets shortly after the resumption with Douglas making a creditable 43.

A late flurry by Craig Sample (32) saw Whitley Bay end their innings on 164-8.

The Monkseaton reply never really got going with the hosts struggling to 70-7 with Ivan Pearson doing the most damage ending with bowling figures of 3-13 from his 12 overs.

However, a near faultless eighth wicket partnership of 95 between Tunstall and Errington saw Monkseaton home with seven balls to go.

In the reverse fixture a very inexperienced Whitley Bay second XI were outplayed by their more streetwise opposition with the away team winning by nine wickets.

This week both teams play newly promoted opposition with the first XI hosting Warenford at Hillheads and the seconds travelling to the extremes of Northumberland to face Tillside.
