Eldery man repeatedly punched to the face by robbers

An elderly man ended up in hospital after he was repeatedly punched by robbers who stole his cash and mobile phone.

The 71-year-old man was in a wheelchair when he was attacked and robbed at 6.35pm on Sunday. May 18, in the rear of Silkey’s Lane in North Shields.

He was punched several times causing him to fall to the ground and cash and a mobile phone was stolen from him.

The injured man was taken to North Tyneside Hospital where he was kept in overnight for treatment for facial injuries.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area or may have witnesssed anything suspicious to contact them.

Two people a 38-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and are detained in custody.

Enquiries are ongoing in the area and additional officers are on patrol to reassure the community.
