Empty shops should be converted to make flats

THERE has been much discussion lately about where to build houses in North Tyneside.

Unfortunately those being built are amongst the most expensive sort.

We have about 800 homeless folk who need cheap accommodation, whilst we have many empty small shops with the first floors above many standing empty.

Oak Tree Gardens has council owned shops long-term unused. Can these and other unused properties not be converted into flats?

This has already been done in St Ronan’s Road on a small scale by a private landlord – we need this extended.

Can our council not give a lead in this urgent need?
