TOUR guide Alan Fidler has been presented with a national award for his enthusiasm in showing visitors around North Tyneside.
Alan, of Alma Place in North Shields, has been named as VisitEngland’s first ‘Tourism Superstar’ after being nominated by the NewcastleGateshead Initiative.
He was presented with his prize at the VisitEngland Excellence Awards ceremony in Leicester.
The 62-year-old set up EastCoast Tours as a sideline to Whitley Bay’s EastCoast Taxis around four years ago.
The firm shows visitors the best of the region from the back of a taxi and works with ferry firm DFDS Seaways on building tourism packages.
Alan, also the co-ordinator of the Tynemouth World War One Commemoration Project, which is published every week in the News Guardian, said: “It was very gratifying to get the award.
“It is recognition to the amount of work I have put in over a number of years.
“It is also a reward for doing something I really enjoy, which is showing Newcastle and the north east of England to visitors from far and near.”
NewcastleGateshead Initiative chief executive Sarah Stewart said: “Their collective achievement is testament to the north east’s continued strength as a destination for tourism with some truly outstanding attractions and hotels.
“In also recognising Alan Fidler’s drive and commitment to ensuring the best possible experience for visitors as the nation’s ‘Tourism Superstar’, we can be proud of the inspiring personalities and places that make the area so popular with both domestic and international visitors.”
