Event to mark centre’s first anniversary

A series of events are taking place on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of Whitley Bay Customer First Centre.

The community event will showcase the work of local groups and organisations in the town.

Representatives from groups including Whitley Bay Photographic Society, Friends of the Earth, the Baby Equipment and Loans Service and Whitley Bay FC Juniors will be there to share their work in the community with others; and to invite new volunteers to join them.

Residents are invited to drop in anytime from 10am to 3pm for a cuppa and a slice of birthday cake, and to have a chat with the various groups about how they can get involved.

Coun Eddie Darke, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “This building is a focal point for the community.

“We hope that residents will come along on Saturday to find out how they can help that community by giving some of their time to a local group.”

There will also be information about the wide range of services that the library offers, including ebook downloads, computer access and library events for all the family.

The Customer First Centre brings together a range of council services under one roof, including a state-of-the-art library and customer service centre.

Since the York Road site opened to the public in April, it has welcomed more than 468,200 visitors.

A café run by Age UK North Tyneside has become an added feature to the already popular building, serving refreshments.
