Cullercoats RNLI Inshore Lifeboat and Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were called out just before 1pm on Tuesday after the four, including two young girls, were left stranded.

A spokesperson for the TVLB said: “Due to the approximate four-hour wait the family were facing in what were cold and blustery conditions, the lifeboat was dispatched to rescue the family and transfer them back to the mainland.

“The family were very apologetic for the inconvenience they had caused and explained that they had been distracted by a seal they had been observing on the far side of the island.”

“Visitors to St Mary’s Island are reminded to check the safe crossing times for the causeway which are displayed by the information boards at the car park closest to the Island.”
