Festival of summer events prepares to draw to a close

A free summer events programme will come to a close next week with live music, international street entertainment and fun activities for children.

The Spanish City Plaza will host a week-long programme of events, courtesy of street entertainers fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

A range of international buskers will be showcasing weird and wonderful talents with daily shows between noon and 3pm, from Monday, August 24, to Monday, August 31.

Shows will include juggling, magic, comedy, acrobatics and much more with performers from Israel, USA and Australia joining the line-up with some of the UK’s best crowd-pleasing talent.

Tynemouth Station will have a special activity area for children under five years between Monday, August 24, and Friday, August 28, with sessions taking place at 10am and 11.15am daily.

Each day will feature different activities including messy play, interactive sports classes for pre-school children, music and dance. Numbers are limited and places are on a first come, first served basis.

There will be live jazz performances in the afternoons by local groups including; the Vieux Carre Jazzmen, Non Electric Band, Maine Street Jazzmen and New Orleans.

The events are all part of the North Tyneside Summer Festival, supported by DFDS Seaways.

Other events planned over the next week across the borough include the North Shields Proper Food and Drink Festival on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30. The event will take place at Northumberland Square in North Shields between 10am and 5pm.

• Elsewhere, Whitley Bay Big Local are continuing their programme of events at their shop in Park View.

Families can see whose cakes can rise to the occasion in the Great Big Local Bake Off on August 22.

An energetic HIP POP dance session for children and accompanying adults will be lead by Abby’s Academy on August 27.
