The A1058 was closed for five hours on Monday night to allow for an investigation into a five car collision.
Just before 9pm a Volkswagen Transporter van, two Vauxhall Corsas, a BMW and a Ford Focus were involved in a collision on the east bound carriageway near Wallsend.
Railings along the road were mangled and the van was overturned, and a driver and a passenger had to be cut from their vehicle by emergency services.
But despite the apparent scale of the accident to onlookers, no one suffered any serious injuries.
It’s believed the collision occurred when one vehicle struck the central reservation and overturned, which led to another four vehicles becoming involved in the crash.
Residents in adjacent houses heard the sound of the crash and many lined the streets of both sides of the Coast Road watching the recovery.
Comments on social network sites following the collision suggested fireworks had been set off towards the road, and had caused the collision, but police have said there is no indication the incident was linked to fireworks.
Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 for attention of the Road Safety Unit.
