Monkseaton High School is holding the trials for young players looking to join its new Football Academy.

The free sessions will take place on the school pitches on Friday, February 19, from 1pm to 3pm for current Year 8s who will go into Year 9 in September.

Monkseaton is hoping to attract the cream of the crop of Tyneside and Northumberland’s football talent over the next few years with the number of pupils increasing year on year as each school year is filled.

The Academy will be run by Improtech Elite coaching which already runs a successful Football Academy at Kepier School on Wearside.

Improtech’s managing director, former Premier League player Martin Scott, said: “We’re very excited about the football trials at Monkseaton next week and want to see as many 12 to 13-year-olds there as possible.

“It’s a case of throwing the doors open and seeing what talent is out there and we’re not just looking at Monkseaton or Whitley Bay, we’re looking all the way across Tyneside and Northumberland.”

The new football academy at Monkseaton has won the backing of ex-pupil Michael Bridges who went on to play for Sunderland, Leeds United and Newcastle United.

And Scott says he wants to unearth the future Michael Bridges of the area, who can be cultivated, developed and improved.

Kepier already has a track record of placing pupils at the Academies of leading north east clubs Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough with Monkseaton expected to do the same.

Scott said: “You get lots of young players who have talent and ability and can either go on to develop it or maybe fall a little bit short.

“Improtech is short for improve technique and young players in the area are soon going to have a really great opportunity to make the most of themselves.

“The great thing is that they will be able to develop their abilities under specialist coaches in school time as well as after school and the improvements we often see are quite dramatic.”

Anyone aged between 12 and 13 across Tyneside and Northumberland is welcome to attend the sessions.
