Golfers will be looking to hole out in one of the biggest growing charity events on the golf calendar.

Now in its third year, more than £25,000 has been raised at the Percy Hedley Cup to support the work of the Percy Hedley Foundation.

And organisers are hoping to raise a record amount this year for the Foundation’s ‘Splash Appeal’ – which aims to raise £1m for a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool.

More than 140 golfers are taking part in the event on Friday, May 29, at Longhirst Golf Club, near Morpeth.

Event founder and organiser Richard Atthey has a very close bond with the foundation as his brother, John James Atthey, attended for many happy years until he sadly passed away in 2008.

Using his contacts in the golf industry, he was able to put together the unique event.

Richard, of Tynemouth, said: “This is our third Percy Hedley Cup and by far the biggest to date.

“I’ve worked in the golf industry for a number of years and attended many a ‘traditional’ fundraising golf day.

“With thousands of charity golf events taking place across the UK every year, competition is fierce and when myself and Simon Bibby, from Minster Cleaning, got our heads together in 2013, we wanted to create something unique; something which would become a ‘calendar golf day’ that simply could not be missed.

“The Percy Hedley Cup is a celebration of great things from the region that we are all so proud of.”

Food on the day will be provide by The Fat Hippo and Geordie Bangers, among others, with beer from Allendale Brewery, plus outfits from Wolsey Golf and a visit by the world famous trick shot boys, Kevin Carpenter and Geoff Swaine.

Richard added: “We have some really quirky things going on during the day but it’s more the atmosphere that makes this day special.

“We’re delighted to have sold out, so quickly.

“Almost everyone playing has played before, which is fantastic, I’ve just been blown away by the support.”

There are still sponsorship opportunities at this year’s Percy Hedley Cup.
