North Tyneside Council’s planning committee gave the green light to an application to build the terraced homes next to Westholme Farm Social Club, in Mullen Road, Wallsend.

The committee, who took a visit to the site, were told that the wasteland was overgrown with grass and shrubs and as it was in a residential area that officers felt the application was acceptable.

The committee received two letters of objection from residents who felt the houses would be too close to their homes, and a letter of objection from the social club.

Coun Lesley Spillard, speaking on behalf of the residents, said: “The problem with this site is it’s an overdevelopment.

“It’s going to be overimposing on the houses already there.”

Mick Sheldon, applicant, said: “The club had asked for this land to be taken out of their lease.

“We met with them two years ago and an agreement reached over the land transfer.

“We have tried to co-operate with the club.”

Coun Jim Allan said: “I think we’re shoehorning a development into a very small site and it will have ongoing issues.”

Coun Carl Johnson added: “I don’t like the application, particularly for highways issues, and I hope common sense will be used by the Highways Manager to ensure the refuse isn’t collected during peak times.

“I can’t see any reason to refuse this.”
