Group calls for new parking system in village
A new campaign has been launched to encourage more people to visit Tynemouth.
Traders in the village have teamed up to ask North Tyneside Council to replace current pay and display machines in some car parks with free timed disc parking.
They say some visitors have been put off visiting Tynemouth since the council increased parking charges to £1.20 an hour, or are using some residential streets.
But members of the Tynemouth Parking Group say disc parking would encourage motorists to use car parking, create a fair turnover of spaces, and has proved a success in Northumberland after being introduced by Northumberland County Council.
Jacqui Keddy said: “We are looking for viable options to improve the parking situation in the village without impacting on any current resident permit parking-only zones and hopefully easing parking congestion on non-restricted residential streets.
“We are hoping our idea of free disc parking replacing the current pay and display will encourage visitors to park in the various car parks in the village that are often under used as drivers choose to park in unrestricted residential streets to avoid paying the £1.20 an hour charge.”
The group, who would like to see Front Street remain pay and display, say the closer to the village centre, the shorter time the time limit for disc parking.
As well as council-run car parks, the group would like to see Station Terrace included in any scheme, on weekends, to increase the turnaround of spaces for visitors to the station market.
Jacqui said: “Parking has been an issue in Tynemouth for a long time.
“We’re not prepared to sit back and see another summer of parking misery in the village.
“Free parking has proved to work in Priors Haven car park, an area once never used when it was pay and display it is now regularly full to capacity.
“By removing more pay & display charges, and managing these spaces with time limits we feel we will reduce parking congestion in unrestricted residential streets, create a greater turnaround of available parking spaces.”

“The parking disc scheme is fantastic and will help visitors, residents and businesses alike.”
A council spokesperson said: “North Tyneside Council works hard to balance the parking needs of our residents, business and visitors.
“There are no plans to change the parking management arrangements in Tynemouth.
“Where any changes to parking arrangements in the borough are proposed, these are subject to appropriate consultation with residents and businesses.”
