Group flexing its mussels

A NETWORKING group formed over a bowl of seafood is about to launch in North Tyneside.

The Mussel Club was founded over a shellfish supper by a group of 20 like-minded business people in Newcastle and has gone from strength to strength with branches across the north east – with a borough group starting in March.

The club was created to provide a relaxed, informal environment for business people to meet and enjoy talks from a variety of guest speakers.

The North Tyneside Mussel Club launches at The Village Hotel, Shiremoor, on Tuesday. March 15, with Paul Callaghan, chairman of One North East and The Leighton Group, as guest speaker, who will be addressing members on the challenges and opportunities for the north east economy.

Membership is free and meetings are held in restaurants across the region with previous speakers having represented a variety of organisations.

Members only need turn up when they are available and are only charged by the restaurant for their food and drink.

Club founder Geoff Bowman said: “A few of us were sharing a bowl of mussels and it occurred to us how much nicer and more productive it might be to make business contacts in a pleasant, relaxed environment than at some stiff, formal networking event – and that’s how The Mussel Club started.”
