Hundreds of hardy souls braved icy conditions for a traditional dash into the North Sea.
Dozens of people – cheered on by family, friends and spectators – took part in the 15th annual Boxing Day dip in the sea at Whitley Bay beach.
Festive overindulgences were quickly forgotten after overnight temperatures plummeted, leaving people feeling the cold before they had even reached the water.
The annual event, running since 1998, is organised by the North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards with dippers raising money for both the lifeguard club and a charity of their choice.
Participants were able to take part in the dip in fancy dress, swimming suits or wearing one of the special commemorative t-shirts provided by the NSVL.
And all those who took part were presented with a certificate at the end.
