North Tyneside Council is on the lookout for a creative person or team to create a series of innovative public art and design works for the Northern Promenade.

Work is already underway to spruce up the seafront strip with new surfacing, seating, shelters and other facilities.

A tender process is underway and all submissions will be shortlisted before the commission is awarded to the successful candidate.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for someone with artistic flair to come up with creative and original ideas to help add to the fantastic improvements taking place along the Promenade.

“We want to hear from an artist or design team who can add to the vibrancy of the promenade and complement the changes being made to bring it life by using lighting to encourage even more people to visit in the evenings.

“I am hugely excited about the designs for the promenade which will spruce up the whole area and I’m really looking forward to seeing the artwork as I’m sure many residents will be too.”

The winning effort will include ideas to add creativity and breathe new life into the seafront. It will also help revitalise the promenade and its surroundings, enhance the distinctiveness of Whitley Bay and improve the visual and physical connectivity to the Spanish City site and St Mary’s Lighthouse.

Interested artists or design teams can find out more at the Spanish City Plaza between 1pm and 3pm on Friday. Anyone interested in attending should email [email protected]
