Efforts are being made to secure the future of a popular event in Whitley Bay.
Tens of thousands of people have descended on the seaside town over the years for its annual carnival.
In a move to secure the future of Whitley Bay Carnival and generate valuable work and training opportunities for local artists, a new not-for-profit company – SALTo Arts Productions – has been set up.
Co-directors Carol Alevroyianni and Richard Broderick have produced the carnival for the past four years and say the new company will continue to work with partners focusing on community-based celebrations with the carnival its showcase event.
Carol said: “We both have backgrounds in large-scale outdoor events and work with a team of skilled makers but investing in training and skill sharing is crucial if we want the carnival to have a future.
“Funding is the other pressing concern and this new company will give us a vehicle for fund-raising and trade so that we are not dependent upon any one income stream.
“Our focus right now is on our own town carnival but we hope to be producing the Mouth of the Tyne pageant parade in July in partnership with the schools music hub and will be involved in the Vamos Mardi Gras celebrations in Newcastle this summer.”
Plans are being finalised for the Big Carnival Ball on Friday, May 25, and the parade and performances at the Spanish City Plaza the following day, thanks to an award from Arts Council England and support from Whitley Bay Big Local and local businesses.
