Home event boosts trek fund-raising
A North Shields resident is already close to achieving the £3,000 fund-raising target connected to a week-long trek in Asia later this year.
Every penny that Lynsey Butler receives from people making a donation will go to Maggie’s, based in the grounds of the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, which provides anyone with cancer and their family and friends with emotional, practical and social support.
She is taking part in the Britain v Cancer Cambodia Trek – organised by Dream Challenges – in memory of her father-in-law, Patrick Butler.
He suffered from prostate cancer and died last August.
The 38-year-old has organised a range of activities to help with donations and a Maggie’s Kitchen Table Day, which included a raffle, recently took place at her home.
Lynsey said: “As well as the refreshments available, there were games for everyone to join in – everything from a tombola to a guess how many balloons are in the Volkswagen Beetle car activity.
“We had 60 people visit, including Darius Defoe of the Newcastle Eagles, who took part in the raffle draw. The lucky winner of the DFDS Cruise to Amsterdam for two prize was Clare Loveridge.
“We raised £228 at this event and £917 in raffle ticket sales. I couldn’t have done this without the support and contributions from family, friends and a number of businesses across North Tyneside and elsewhere in the North East.
“I’m self-funding the trip and I’m delighted that I’ve already raised more than £2,400 in total. This includes £111.05 from a tombola organised by the staff at the TOG24 store in Royal Quays.
“The trek will take me and others in the group through stunning jungles and traditional Cambodian villages. As well as the great experiences it promises, I signed up because I thought it would be a good way to raise a decent amount for Maggie’s.”
She will do a bag pack at the Morrisons near North Shields and the Allendale Challenge this month and a ‘Maggie’s March’ Hadrian’s Wall walk over a few days with stepdaughter Laura Parker will take place in May.
