Homeowner escapes injury after firework pushed through letterbox

A LIT firework was pushed through the letterbox of a house in Longbenton.

No one was injured in the incident, but the firework caused damage to the door and a curtain in the property after it went off.

Police are treating it as arson and are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, which happened in Langdale Close, Longbenton, between 4.50pm and 5pm on Thursday, November 3.

Inspector John Smith, of the Killingworth Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We take incidents of this nature very seriously and are carrying out enquiries into this crime.

“Fortunately no-one was injured but the consequences of this action could have been a lot more serious.

“We have officers making extra patrols in the area and we want to get the message across that misuse of fireworks is a serious offence and will not be tolerated.

“Anyone who is found misusing fireworks can be fined up to £5,000, such as for throwing a firework in a public place.”
