HOUSING: Government, not council is to blame
I'd just like to remind the person who wrote the letter entitled '˜Let's look at the whole picture' (News Guardian, March 24), that the house building problem is not one caused by the Labour council.
As reported in this newspaper a few years ago, our Labour council refused planning permission for the estate to be built in West Monkseaton on fields opposite Wellfield Estate.
It was Eric Pickles, the Conservative secretary of state for local government at the time, who overruled this and forced this house building to be accepted.
The current housing plans are a result of the government ordering all councils to provide large numbers of houses.
If the council refused, I would imagine the current Conservative secretary of state would equally force through more ill-thought out plans.
