Hundreds will attend festival

Final preparations are in place for the popular Brierdene Midsummer Festival.

Organised by the Friends of Brierdene, the event will take place in the beauty spot – which stretches from The Links to Whitley Bay Golf Club – on Saturday, June 21, from 1pm to 5pm.

Last year more than 1,200 people attended and this year there will be stalls, a dog show, birds of prey, a tug of war, archery, Apeuro Free Running display, music, movies by the Jam Jar Cinema and more.

Presentations will also be made to the winners of the Brierdene Midsummer Festival Writing Competition, which saw more than 200 entries.

The winners were Hannah Jackson (Year 4, Coquet Park First School); Freddie Sharpe (Year 4, Whitley Lodge First); Samuel Troup (Year 3, South Wellfield First) and Oliver Finlayson (Year 2, Marine Park First) while 51 entries will be published in a book.

Local performance poet Jenni Pascoe judged the entries and said: “The standard of the stories was very high, and not only that, the pictures were wonderful. They were a treat to read.”
