I share disbelief about car wash proposals

I TAKE this opportunity to inform local residents in Cullercoats that I share the disbelief of the local community that the Planning Committee’s Labour members voted unanimously to approve the unpopular proposal for a car wash and valeting facility in John Street, Cullercoats.

After speaking to several local residents, they are disappointed that Labour chose not to support the community on this issue.

Over 60 letters of objection were received, plus a petition with well over 100 signatures which highlighted residents concerns.

The car wash is not an ideal use of the site, this new approved facility now sadly has the potential to provide the wrong image for Cullercoats Village.

I give a commitment to work in conjunction with the local community and fellow ward councillors – Shirley Mortimer and Ken Barrie – who both voted against the application to ensure the new car wash adheres to several planning conditions.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their support during the campaign, the residents who either objected by letter or signed the petition. To the several residents who knocked on doors to gain more support, plus the several locations which took the petition on their premises.

The campaign was a classic example of the community working together, it was a shame that we did not get the result we so rightly deserved.
