Jenny plays in Caribbean

A NORTH Shields-based musician has returned from her third trip to Trinidad, where she was selected to perform with a top steel orchestra.

Jenny Gilberg, 25, played with the BP Renegades in the Trinidad and Tobago Panorama 2013 competition, alongside 120 other players.

The band was placed third in the final, which took place in Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.

Jenny, who works across the north east as a steelpan and woodwind music teacher, and also performs as a pan soloist, regularly tutors, arranges and performs with North Tyneside Steelband.

She has played for a number of years with London bands for the annual London Panorama and Notting Hill Carnival.

Jenny said: “I would thoroughly recommend steelpan to young people as a way to enjoy making music.

“It has provided me with so many opportunities and experiences and now a successful career.”

In 2008 she won the British Association of Steelbands Soloist title, the only pannist outside of London to win the title, and in 2011 was runner-up in the UK Pan Clash competition.
