An optician had his eyes on the prize after being part of a quiz team who beat television ‘professionals’.
There was no cracking up for John Anderson and his team mates when they appeared on the BBC’s Eggheads programme – and walked away with £25,000.
John was joined by friends Alice Snowden, Mike Snowden, Jonathan Cameron and Peter Nesbit from his home town of Eyemouth plus Dunbar and St Abbs to make up the ‘Quizzical’ team, with Morag Haddow watching on as substitute.
They managed to hold off the famous television experts to become just the 122nd team to win on the popular show.
John, an optician at Robinsons Optometrist in Monkseaton, said: “It’s not often you see the Eggheads lose and we were lucky enough to beat them.
“The other members of the team quiz regularly at a pub in Eyemouth, they put themselves forward and asked me to join them.
“Quizzing isn’t something I normally do. If I am back home I will join them in the pub quiz up there, but I don’t take part in any around here.”
John, who lives in Monkseaton, spent four hours at the BBC studio in Glasgow filming the episode, which went out on February 11.
“There was big scenes of joy and celebration when we won, it was a great feeling,” he said.
“On the last question, they took about ten minutes thinking of the answer, making sure they didn’t know it. There was high suspense waiting.
“We had already agreed beforehand that we would split whatever we won six ways.
“We all watched it together with the regulars at the pub in Eyemouth and the place erupted when we won.
“I hadn’t told anyone at work how we had got on, they thought we had been beaten, but when I came into work the day after the episode there was a little celebration and my colleagues congratulated me.”
