Join those paying their respects

IT all began in the 1970s, a few officers and NCOs of 216 (V) RCT Squadron had to remain at New Cliffords Fort TA Centre in Tynemouth while the rest of the squadron and Northumbria Army Cadets went on parade on Remembrance Sunday in North Shields.

These were the cooks, barmen and admin staff who had to ready the messes and TA Centre for the return of the squadron and the VIP guests. However, slowly over the years it grew and grew.

This year on November 11 the service and parade is still led by the few members of the TA at Cliffords Fort not on parade at Hawkey’s Lane in North Shields from 216 RLC (V) and 5th Battalion RRF.

However, they are joined by many of the ex-members of 216 Squadron RCT now in North Tyneside RSAC and RCT Association, who march through the village to the service to form with members of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, representatives from the police, SCC, ACF, ATC and residents of Tynemouth Village.

The service begins at 10.30am and all are welcome.

I have the honour and privilege to play the Last Post at 11am on behalf of the RCT Association and former Corps of Drums officer of Northumbria Army Cadet Force.

So if you are in Tynemouth on November 11, or you live in the village, come and join the 100 to 200 who gather to pay their respects to the fallen from the past and sadly from today’s armed services.
