Knitted tree will be turned into blankets

A NORTH Shields church will be opening its doors this weekend for a Festival of Light.

St Columba’s Church in Northumberland Square will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday to coincide with the town’s Victorian Christmas Market in the square.

The church will have a seven-foot knitted tree on display.

Hundreds of green squares, tree ornaments and tinsel have been knitted by the HANDS group, other church members and friends, to create the tree.

At the end of the festive season the squares will be made into blankets and given to charitable organisations.

Proceeds from the festival will go to the Tynemouth Blind Welfare Society.
