Lighting the way for charity walk
Hundreds of people are to light up a charity walk in memory of lost loved ones.
The Lantern Walk – which raises funds for St Oswald’s Hospice – is taking place at the Rising Sun Country Park, Benton, on Saturday, June 30.
The 5km walk sees participants receive a St Oswald’s T-shirt, coloured lantern and battery operated candle.
Due to popular demand, the online Memory Wall will return, where supporters can email a photo of their loved one to [email protected], and it will appear in a special gallery on the St Oswald’s website at www.stoswaldsuk.org/lantern-walk
Anna Smith, from Wallsend, is taking part for the second time, in remembrance of her mother Muriel Thompson who died 17 years ago.
She said: “I took part in the walk last year as I thought it would be a good way to get fit without pushing myself too hard. It was such an upbeat and happy evening but it was also really poignant and loving.
“I was thinking about my mam as I walked the course. You could see around you the solidarity of families and friends coming together and celebrating the life of someone and it was lovely.
“I decided I wanted to do it again. Although my mam died many years ago and didn’t receive hospice care, I think its special way to spend some time thinking about my memories of her.
“I know from the experiences of my friends that hospices are a vital service, so walking for a good cause gives you the pride you’re helping.”
The fundraising event is sponsored by McClure Solicitors and is in partnership with Smooth Radio. Smooth Breakfast Show presenter Steve Colman will be on hand to host, along with music, entertainment, and a warm up before the walk gets on its way.
Everyone is welcome to the event, although under 16s much be accompanied by an adult.
Participants are encourages to gather sponsorship or donations in their loved ones name, to support the adults, young people and children with incurable conditions who rely on the Hospice,
For those unable to make the walk, donations can still be made in memory and supporters will receive a thank you letter with a photo of the lantern display, including one placed in memory of their special person.
