When he died on January 10, 1928, the local newspaper dwelt on his achievements as a swimming instructor.

He was a founder of the Tynemouth Amateur Swimming Club and its honorary swimming master for most of his life. For over 30 years he had attended at Tynemouth Haven between 6am and 7.30am each day to teach children to swim, and from 1907 onwards transferred his activities to the Hawkey’s Lane pool.
