Their programme began on Tuesday 21 with launching the battleship King George V at Walker and continued with an inspection of the new maternity block at Wallsend Infirmary.

After leaving Wallsend the royal couple drove through the Ridges Estate to the centre of North Shields to view the new Sir James Knott Youth Centre. Erected at a cost of £50,000, it was designed as a centre for all Tynemouth Borough’s youth organisations, including the YMCA. Finished in 1938, it had a membership of 2500.
