Looking Back at Whitley Bay founder William Spicer
William Spicer, once held to be one of the founders of Whitley Bay, was born at Gilling, Yorkshire, in February 1844.
He worked for Dale Young Nelson & Co before becoming manager of the York City and County Banking Co branch at Newcastle in 1890. He retired from banking in 1909.
He lived in Whitley Village from 1866 and married Ann Isabella Naters, of Cullercoats, in 1871. He was a member of the Whitley and Monkseaton Board of Health from 1874, served on the Urban District Council until 1904, was a county councillor and magistrate, and worked for several charities. In 1888 he joined the volunteer force in the Tynemouth Royal Garrison Artillery, retaining the title of Major on retirement in 1904. He died in February 1925.
