In parades and on fundraising days she pulled little carriages, accompanied by children in patriotic costume. By the end of the war she had collected more than £2,000, then a considerable sum.

She is posing with men from the Tyne Iron Ship Building Company of Howdon, at George Clavering’s Farm at Low Willington.

George began working in the collieries and later was a butcher in Howdon Pans for about 20 years, before taking over Howdon Farm in Church Street.

In later years his sons managed Howdon and Low Willington Farms. George and John Clavering were prominent in civic affairs and Low Willington Farm was used for fetes and Sunday school galas.
