Looking Back at Woodlawn School
The first open air school for the health of children was opened in Germany in 1904. Tynemouth Open Air School opened on July 15, 1918, and was given temporary premises, using spare ground at the site proposed for Spring Gardens School.
It used pioneering methods, such as sun baths, knitting and exercise therapy, as methods of improving the wellbeing and learning of its pupils.
In September 1965 the school became known as Woodlawn School in Brightman Road, and later moved to Monkseaton.
It realised how important it was for pupils to swim so in 1985 began a campaign to raise money for a hydrotherapy pool. The pool was officially opened by Princess Diana in 1992.
The school celebrates its centenary on July 15.
