Magicians from the borough have become the first girls ever to win the Young Magician of the Year Competition.

Local magicians Leah Mae Devine and Sara Jade Devine, from Monkseaton, who perform under the stage name Destiny, won through the heats of the competition, which is a Magic Circle Youth Initiative.

And the girls, who attend St Thomas More RC Academy, took the crown at the event at the Magic Circle’s London headquarters – making history by being the first females to do so.

Leah is a third generation magician and has been performing magic since the age of eight, when she, assisted by younger sister Sara performed magic in their ballet school show.

They loved it so much they have been performing magic and illusion ever since.

The competition, which was first held in 1961, is open to young people between the age of 14 and 18 years.

Leah and Sarah have now won admission to full Membership of The Magic Circle at the age of 18.

Mum Su Jayne Devine said: “Over the years this competition has produced many winners who have gone on to make very successful careers in show business.

“We are of course very proud of what they achieved.”
