MAINTENANCE: Cycle paths need work

Many drivers who use the Shiremoor bypass probably wonder why the majority of cyclists choose to ride on the road rather than on the cycle path.

Quite simply, the condition of the path is shocking, especially on the westbound side.

Some sections look more like a pebble beach than a recently constructed cycle lane. The grit and stones could quickly lead to punctures, especially for bikes with narrow tyres, and who wants a puncture on their way to work?

Last year I emailed a local councillor on this topic, but despite his positive response, I doubt if anything was actually done.

Who knows whether or not the paths were swept even once, but regular maintenance is certainly required.

If not carried out, then was it really worthwhile building the cycle paths in the first place?

The cycle path on the east side of Earsdon Road is in the same sorry state.
