FIRE crews are currently dealing with a major fire at a scrapyard in Byker today (Thursday).
Firefighters and police were called to Shepherd’s Scrap Yard in Byker Bank, Newcastle, at 12.25pm after reports of thick smoke.
An estimated 40 firefighters are at the scene, while roads including Leighton Street and Byker Bank have been closed to traffic and pedestrians.
The thick smoke can be seen as far away as Wallsend, South Shields and Consett, as well as over Newcastle city centre.
Nearby residents and businesses have been told by police to keep all windows and doors closed and stay inside as a precaution.
