A MAN has died following a crash on the Coast Road near North Shields.
Emergency services were called to the A1058 Coast Road just before 7.20pm last night (Tuesday) following reports of a one vehicle accident involving a red Volkswagon Golf.
The crash happened in the eastbound carriageway at the Formica Factory slip road at the junction with Norham Road, North Shields.
Police, ambulance and fire crews all attended but a 38-year-old man from Blyth was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police spokesman said there were no other casualties involved, although a dog was killed at the scene as well.
A section of the road was closed for several hours to allow for investigations to take place, being re-opened by police in the early hours of this morning. The slip road for Norham Road remains closed and is not expected to open until after 10am today.
Officers investigating the crash are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.

Two hours after the accident, a 30-year-old man who is believed to have been involved in the crash attended Bedlington police station where he was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is helping police with enquiries.
