Meagre display of festive lights

MANY, many years ago I wrote a letter to the News Guardian questioning the seasonal significance of a plastic parrot as part of the Christmas illuminations in Northumberland Square in North Shields.

As it happens, the parrot and I went on to form an affinity and ended up sharing an allotment.

Since those days the standard of the illuminations has improved year on year, until now.

I am hard pressed to drum up any enthusiasm for a meagre display of red and white striped lights in a Geordie town’s square.
