A group of students have been celebrating their success in a national biology competition.
The pupils at Longbenton Community College picked up a host of medals in the British Biology Olympiad (BBO), the Society of Biology’s national competition for 16 to 18-year-olds.
Alexandra Welsh and Thomas Sample were both awarded Gold medals, while Calum Hails, Leah Braviner and Jordan Rooney were awarded Silver medals.
Four other students – Anthony Blenkinsop, Oscar Reid, Molly Pledger and Zachary Hui – were awarded certificates of commendation.
The school had a record total of 30 students taking part in the annual competition which aims to stimulate students with an interest in biology to expand and extend their talents by offering a wider syllabus than A-level.
Headteacher Paul Quinn said: “This is a truly fantastic achievement from these students.
“Well done to them and to the teachers who have inspired them to reach such heights on a national stage.
“I am sure that competing in the Olympiad will encourage many of these students already interested in this valuable, wide-ranging and rewarding subject to continue their study beyond A-level.”
